Planning a stay in Kołobrzeg and wondering where to stay—downtown or in the seaside district right by the beach? It’s a question everyone asks when visiting this coastal resort for the first time. Both locations have their advantages, and the final choice depends on your priorities.

Kołobrzeg – a city of two worlds

Kołobrzeg has two distinct sides. The choice between downtown accommodation and the beach is a common holiday dilemma. On one side is the historic centre, with a thousand-year heritage: the Old Town, Salt Island, Parsęta boulevards, monuments and cultural life. On the other is the seaside district, focused on relaxation: the pier, promenade, beach, sanatoriums and spa hotels.

The two parts of the city are about 1–1.5 km apart, which means a relaxed 12–18-minute walk. For some, this is ideal; for others, it means the inconvenience of travelling between them every day.

Kołobrzeg city centre – the historic heart

Kołobrzeg city centre is mainly the Old Town and the area around Salt Island. The city’s key sights, best restaurants serving regional cuisine, atmospheric cafés and local shops are concentrated here.

What do you gain by staying downtown?

An authentic city atmosphere. You become part of real Kołobrzeg, not a tourist enclave. In the morning, you see residents heading to work, buy fresh bread at a local bakery and meet friends in a cosy café in the evening. It feels completely different from the hotel district.

Everything close at hand. The Basilica is 5 minutes away, the Polish Arms Museum 10 minutes away, and the Old Town restaurants are right outside your door. The port and Parsęta boulevards are a short walk away. You can spontaneously go out for lunch, coffee or an evening stroll without planning your whole day around one outing.

More dining options. The centre offers far more varied restaurants—from traditional Polish cuisine and pizzerias to elegant fusion venues. Prices are usually lower than in the seaside tourist zone, and quality is often better.

Lower shopping costs. Grocery shops, bakeries and market stalls are all cheaper than in the seaside zone. If you plan to cook yourself—which makes sense in an apartment with a kitchenette—a family can save 400–800 zł per week.

What will you miss?

Distance from the beach. From Salt Island, the beach is about 1800 metres away (around a 30-minute walk). This may be inconvenient for families with small children.

Less of a holiday atmosphere. You miss the beach vibe—people in swimwear, the smell of fried snacks and street performers.

The seaside district – a holiday by the beach

The seaside district stretches along the beach—from the pier, along the promenade, to the spa district. Large hotels, sanatoriums and guesthouses are concentrated here.

What do you gain by staying near the beach?

Close to the sea. Leave your hotel and reach the beach in 2–5 minutes. You can return for lunch, take a siesta and go back for an afternoon swim. There is no need to pack for the whole day, as the beach is practically outside your window. For families with small children who need frequent returns for changing or naps, this is a huge convenience.

Sea views. Many first-line hotels and apartments offer views of the Baltic Sea. Wake to the sound of waves and fall asleep watching the sunset over the water. It is truly magical and, for many, the essence of a seaside holiday.

A holiday atmosphere. The promenade, pier, people in swimwear, ice-cream shops, children’s attractions and street performers all create a unique holiday vibe. It is relaxed and joyful, and you really feel on holiday.

Access to spa facilities. The seaside district is also a spa area, with graduation towers, walking parks and a mineral-water pump room. If you are undergoing treatment or value daily walks in a healthy sea climate, it is ideal.

What will you miss?

Distance from the centre. The pier is about 1.5 km from the Old Town (an 18–20-minute walk). Every restaurant or museum visit requires planning.

Higher prices. Restaurants, cafés and shops by the promenade charge tourist prices—often 20–30% more than downtown.

Crowds in high season. In July and August, the promenade, beach and restaurants are packed.

Who should choose the centre, and who the seaside district?

The centre is ideal if you:

Enjoy spontaneous walks and evenings out at restaurants. Want to experience a real city atmosphere. Plan to visit historic sights. Find self-catering worthwhile and want cheaper shopping. See a 10–15-minute walk to the beach as part of an active holiday.

We recommend the centre for: couples without children combining beach time with sightseeing, longer stays (a week+), families with teenagers and visitors outside high season.

The seaside district is ideal if you:

Prioritise proximity to the beach. Have small children who need frequent returns. Want a sea view. Do not plan extensive sightseeing. Do not mind higher prices.

We recommend the seaside district for: families with small children (0–6), seniors and people with limited mobility, and those on a short weekend focused on making the most of the beach.

Salt Island – the golden mean

Salt Island combines the advantages of both locations:

  • 300 metres to the Old Town (5 minutes)
  • 850–1800 metres to the beach (15–30 minutes, depending on location on the island)
  • Parsęta boulevards outside your window
  • Shops and restaurants within easy reach
  • The peace of a residential district
  • Prices 20–30% lower than by the beach

Getting between the centre and beach

Even if you choose the centre, reaching the beach is easy:

On foot: 15–30 minutes at a relaxed pace, depending on the location. The route leads through picturesque streets.

By bike: 5–7 minutes. Kołobrzeg has a city-bike rental network—you pick one up by your apartment and leave it at the beach.

By bus: City routes connect the centre with the seaside district. A ticket costs 3–4 zł, and buses run every 15–20 minutes.

FAQ – frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Kołobrzeg?
Three to four days are enough for relaxed sightseeing and beach time. A week offers full comfort—you can see everything without rushing.

How far is the beach from the centre?
From Salt Island (Apartamenty Nad Parsętą), it is 1800 m, or a relaxed 10–12-minute walk. Most people can cover this distance without a problem.

Where are the better restaurants?
The centre has more choice and better value for money. Beachfront restaurants are often 20–30% more expensive and geared towards tourists. If you want good regional cuisine at reasonable prices, the centre wins.

If I stay downtown, will I have to walk to the beach every day with all my gear?
Not necessarily. A 10–15-minute walk is short—you can easily return for lunch or leave some things in the apartment. It depends on your holiday style.

What if I’m travelling with young children?
With young children (0–4), being close to the beach matters more—frequent trips back for changing, feeding and naps are unavoidable. With children aged 5+, the centre may be better, offering more activities beyond the beach.

Apartamenty Nad Parsętą – the perfect balance between the centre and the beach

Apartamenty Nad Parsętą on Solna Island is the perfect compromise between the centre and the beach. Staying here, you have:

  • 300 m to the Old Town (5 minutes on foot)
  • 1,800 m to the beach (approx. 30 minutes on foot)
  • All the restaurants, shops and city-centre attractions within easy reach
  • Views of the Parsęta River from the balcony (in selected apartments)
  • An on-site wellness area (pool, sauna, jacuzzi)
  • A restaurant serving regional cuisine
  • Kitchenettes for preparing your own meals

This location is for those who want everything: proximity to the sea, access to the centre, an authentic city atmosphere and the comfort of a modern apartment.
